The Peoria Riverfront Museum is set to become the stage for a world premiere unlike any other, as legendary oceanographer and explorer Dr. Robert “Bob” Ballard brings his groundbreaking new exhibition, Finding Titanic: The Secret Mission, to central Illinois. Opening on Saturday, September 27, 2025, and running through January 4, 2026, the exhibition—produced by Flying Fish in collaboration with Ballard’s Ocean Exploration Trust and presented by CEFCU—invites audiences into the true, never-before-told story of how one of the greatest maritime discoveries of all time was made possible by Cold War espionage and high-stakes technological innovation.
Dr. Ballard, whose 1985 discovery of the RMS Titanic captured the imagination of the world, will appear in person on opening day, September 27, at 11 a.m., to speak about the journey that led him from a secret U.S. Navy mission to a historic breakthrough in deep-sea exploration. Known for his role as a naval officer, geologist, and pioneer of deep-ocean technologies, Ballard is now publicly sharing for the first time how a covert operation to survey two sunken nuclear submarines—USS Thresher and USS Scorpion—gave him the resources and cover story to finally locate the Titanic. This once-classified account places the discovery in a new light, blending Cold War intrigue with the determination of a small team willing to challenge the impossible.
Inside the exhibition, visitors will explore artifacts, rare footage, and immersive storytelling that reveal both the technical ingenuity and the human drama behind the mission. The narrative unfolds across multiple sections, showing how Ballard’s team overcame the immense pressures of the deep ocean, navigated military secrecy, and introduced technologies that would transform undersea exploration. Objects and multimedia displays transport audiences to the tense atmosphere of the Cold War while also capturing the emotional impact of seeing the wreck of the Titanic for the very first time.
“For the first time ever, we will tell and show you things you have never seen and heard before about our discovery of the RMS Titanic and the Cold War story that led to its discovery, that continues to give up its secrets,” Dr. Ballard emphasized in announcing the exhibition. His words underscore the sense of history being rewritten—revealing how one of the most iconic moments in maritime archaeology was intertwined with national security imperatives.
Support for this premiere comes from CEFCU as the presenting sponsor, with additional sponsorship by the Gilmore Foundation, OLLI Bradley University, Merle and Adeline Dargel Fund for Science and Engineering, Gretchen Hagen Petrakis, and the Corporate Visionary Society Council. Jay Brown, Managing Director of Flying Fish, highlighted the urgency and resonance of the exhibition, calling it “a Cold War secret, cutting-edge science, and one of the greatest discoveries of all time.”
With Finding Titanic: The Secret Mission, Peoria will be the first to unveil a chapter of history long kept hidden. Visitors will not only engage with the iconic story of the Titanic but also discover how science, espionage, and persistence intersected to redefine what was possible beneath the sea. This exhibition promises to be more than a showcase of discovery—it is an invitation to uncover the delicate balance between secrecy and revelation, and to step into a narrative where the Cold War met the deep ocean and changed maritime history forever.
