International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is celebrated annually on June 23rd

June 21, 2024 By admin Leave a Comment

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is celebrated annually on June 23rd, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the significant contributions of women in the field of engineering and encouraging more women and girls to consider engineering as a viable and rewarding career. This day was established by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) in the United Kingdom in 2014, initially as a national campaign. Due to its tremendous success and the need for a global movement to promote gender diversity in engineering, it became an international event in 2017.

The engineering profession has historically been male-dominated, but in recent years, there has been a concerted effort to promote inclusivity and diversity within the field. INWED serves as a crucial platform to highlight the achievements of women engineers, celebrate their contributions to various engineering disciplines, and address the challenges they face in the industry. This day is not only about celebrating current women engineers but also about inspiring future generations to pursue engineering, breaking down stereotypes, and advocating for gender equality in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.

Events held on International Women in Engineering Day range from seminars, workshops, and conferences to school visits, webinars, and networking sessions. These events aim to provide role models, share success stories, and create a supportive community for women in engineering. By showcasing the diverse career paths available within engineering and the impact that engineers have on society, INWED seeks to motivate more young women to enter the field and contribute their unique perspectives and talents.

In addition to raising awareness, INWED emphasizes the importance of mentorship and support networks for women engineers. Organizations and institutions are encouraged to highlight the work of their female engineers, promote gender equality policies, and commit to creating an inclusive environment where women can thrive. This day also calls attention to the ongoing need for structural changes within the engineering industry, such as equal pay, flexible working conditions, and addressing unconscious biases that may hinder the career progression of women.

As the world continues to face complex engineering challenges, from climate change to technological advancements, the contributions of women engineers are more vital than ever. Their diverse perspectives, innovative solutions, and collaborative approaches are essential in driving progress and creating sustainable solutions for future generations.

Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day is not only a tribute to the remarkable women who have already made significant strides in the field but also a call to action to ensure that the next generation of engineers is even more diverse, inclusive, and equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. It is a reminder that engineering is for everyone, and the inclusion of women in this dynamic field is crucial for its growth and innovation.
